New Parking Garage Project

What is happening across the street from COCA?

Washington University is building a shared parking garage adjacent to the 560 Music School Building – construction began in late 2017 and is scheduled to be complete by June 1, 2018 – in time for COCA’s summer camps and classes.

Will COCA students and families have access to the new parking garage? How big is it? Will it be free?

Through a long-term lease agreement with the University, COCA’s families and visitors will have access to this secure, covered lot, directly across the street. As a result, COCA’s families and visitors will continue to have access to free parking on a daily basis.

The new parking garage includes 200+ total spaces serving three groups: COCA, Washington University’s 560 Music School, and the University’s Castlereigh Apartments – the same three groups that had been sharing the two smaller surface lots.

With additional spaces overall, we will continue to manage the new garage much as we managed the two lots – spaces will be divided between us and available on a first-come basis.

During special events, COCA will continue to offer valet services, shuttle services, and collaborate with other nearby parking lot owners. COCA staff and 560 Music School staff will also continue to share event calendars to make the best plans to accommodate our patrons.

Where do I park now? Will there continue to be free parking throughout construction?

COCA’s existing parking lot remains available to our families and visitors through May 2018. Beginning on Monday, January 29, we will close the back portion of the COCA parking lot and begin one-way, drop-off traffic flow to accommodate renovation construction staging and traffic.

Starting in June 2018, parking will be available in the new garage.

Additional parking is available on the street and in nearby lots.

Thank you for your patience as we make these long-term improvements to COCA.

Garage Project Timeline

How long will this all take?

Renovations to the current building are well underway and will be conducted in phases to minimize the impact on our students and families. The renovation project will be complete in time for summer camps in 2018.

Thank you for your patience as we make these long-term improvements to COCA.

The anticipated schedule and impacts:

Fall 2017

Construction begins on the garage. During this time COCA’s parking lot will remain open as usual.

January 29, 2018

COCA’s Founders’ Theatre, Emerson Studio, and Centene Studio close. Performances will be scheduled offsite.

Summer 2018

Classes and camps operate at full capacity after the renovation of the Founders’ Theatre and Emerson Studio into three new spaces: a new Performance Lab and two new studios. The original Mendelsohn Lobby will be reconfigured as a temporary entry. The Staenberg Studio, The Black Box, and the current lobby will close as work begins on the building expansion.

Personal Safety

The safety of our students and patrons is a priority for COCA. While parking during the renovation period (Feb-May) is extremely tight, we realize some patrons may not find space available on the lot. Beginning January 16, we will be utilizing a Security Firm to accompany students and patrons—on request—to and from their cars.

The Security Guard will be on site Monday – Friday 5:30PM -9:30PM.
We will monitor the need during the weekends.
