Event Description

COCA is accepting submissions from adult and student playwrights for COCAwrites: Plays on Zoom. A free online festival on Friday, May 8 at 7:00PM. Please submit your play to dpiggins@cocastl.org by midnight on Monday, April 27.

Academy Award Winner and Master Artist, Tarell Alvin McCraney, joins the team of COCAwrites: Plays on Zoom as a special guest speaker and mentor as COCA prepares to launch its new play development program, COCAwrites, with the Pre-Professional Division this fall. The two student playwrights selected will have their work read by McCraney and receive a private coaching session. Also on Friday, May 8, following the new play festival, COCA will air a special Q&A session with McCraney as we ask him about writing in a time of social distance and his work as a leader in the American Theatre.

We are asking for submissions of plays written with Zoom in mind.

How to Submit Your Work:
Write a scene, 5-10 minutes or less (a general rule of thumb is 1 page=1 minute) for Zoom following these guidelines:

  1. 3 characters or less
  2. The play will be pre-recorded but must take place on Zoom
  3. Stay between 5 & 10 minutes
  4. Have fun with all the possibilities available when writing a digital play

Deadline for submissions is Monday, April 27 at midnight. Please submit your plays and any questions along the way to Delaney Piggins, Artistic Engagement Manager at dpiggins@cocastl.org.

We encourage you to get inspired by Nancy Bell’s play MUTE. Read it and think, how can I write a play with Zoom in mind?

We are now accepting plays written by adult playwrights for multi-generational audiences. We are also accepting plays written for Zoom from students ages 12-22.

Adult Playwright Submissions:
Write a play for Zoom following these guidelines:

  1. 3 characters or less
  2. At least one of those characters must be under 18
  3. The play will be pre-recorded but must take place on Zoom
  4. Stay between 5 & 10 minutes
  5. The play must be written to be enjoyed by a multi-generational theatre audience
What is COCAwrites?

COCAwrites is a new placement for students in all three theatre Pre-professional tracks  focusing on the writing and development of new plays for multi-generational theatre audiences. Students in this program will workshop new plays and musicals written by professional composers and playwrights from around the country while having the chance to develop their own new plays and musicals with the mentorship of these leaders. In the spring, select student works will receive staged readings alongside professional productions and readings in a new play festival. Design-tech students will also have the chance to experiment with new theatrical designs and functions by applying them to never-before-produced plays.

COCA is thrilled to offer this training to students as new work gains attention and priority on all stages across America’s theatres.
