Experience a holiday classic like never before in Manual Cinema’s Christmas Carol! Through hundreds of paper puppets, miniatures, silhouettes, and a live original score, Chicago-based performance collective Manual Cinema takes on the Charles Dickens classic with an imaginative and visually stunning twist specifically created for the 2020 holiday season.
An avowed holiday skeptic, Aunt Trudy has been recruited to channel her late husband Joe’s famous Christmas cheer. From the isolation of her studio apartment, she will reconstruct his annual Christmas Carol puppet show over a Zoom call while the family celebrates Christmas Eve under lock-down. But as Trudy becomes more absorbed in her own version of the story, the puppets take on a life of their own, and the family’s call transforms into a stunning cinematic adaptation of Dickens’s classic ghost story.
Performed live in Chicago, we invite you to join us via livestream right from your home, or at The Berges Theatre for limited seating for this world-premiere event. Unlike any other movie-going experience, Manual Cinema makes the movie right in front of your eyes!

About COCA’s Speaker Series:
COCA’s Speaker Series brings thought-provoking and inspiring work and conversation to our stage and your home in this unique opportunity to experience more than just the show. Throughout the COCA Presents season, we tap professional artists across arts disciplines to share their experiences, the stories behind their work, and their visions for the future of performing arts.
While the performing arts community has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, COCA’s Speaker Series celebrates some of the many artists still hard at work; the visionaries keeping the stage light on.
