A new energy is invigorating the dance studios at COCA.
Bringing over two decades of professional experience from New York City—including his work as assistant choreographer for the Broadway-bound Dreamgirls, Jay Staten has officially arrived in St. Louis as COCA’s new Artistic Director of Dance. He is ready to revolutionize the program.
“COCA already possesses a beautiful, disciplined foundation,” Jay states. “My objective is not to reinvent the wheel, but rather to rejuvenate its purpose. We are simply expanding upon what is already present and establishing a direct connection to the working industry.”
Jay is bringing a dynamic, highly collaborative spirit to the program, with a significant emphasis on the future of performance art. Moving forward, the dance department will introduce exciting new elements, deeply integrating technology and innovation into the curriculum.
“It is not solely about what occurs within the studio; it is about rethinking the entire audience experience,” he explains. “We are progressing toward productions that are immersive and interactive. I aspire for our dancers to acquire the ability to completely transport a room.”
While he is currently withholding the specifics of this season’s updates to allow for speculation, one certainty remains: COCA’s Dance Program is embarking on a novel, invigorating, and exhilarating new chapter.
