The Little Dancer Conceptual Drawing of Scenic Design

In Their Own Words: Sung Ho Kim Shares Scenic Design Concept for The Little Dancer

Sung Ho Kim and Heather Woofter, Co-Directors of Axi:Ome llc of St. Louis and Professors of Architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), return as the Scenic Designers for COCA’s brand new production of The Little Dancer: Moments in Time.

“As we developed the concept for the scenic design, we were inspired by changing the layers of the environment and breaking the scale; the relationship between the ground, ramp, and staircases; and the notion of floating and moving.

Our conceptual drawing was influenced by Benesh and Laban notations to express the system of movements and spatial dynamics on the stage, mapping how dancers move on stage through an architectural eye. It also connects dance theory and language and how the architecture interfaces dance as a discipline.

From exchanging ideas with Creative Director and Choreographer Kevin Jenkins to helping him understand the process of set creation and spatial understanding, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the collaboration for the design of this new production!”
